We are excited to announce our collaboration with Newcastle City Council as they embark on an ambitious project to expand their public WiFi network. Recognising the importance of digital connectivity, the Council is extending its WiFi services beyond public buildings to encompass numerous outdoor spaces throughout the city. This expansion aims to enhance connectivity for residents, workers, and visitors, ensuring that everyone can stay connected, no matter where they are in Newcastle.
Commitment to Safety with Friendly WiFi Certification
A key aspect of this expansion is Newcastle City Council’s commitment to online safety. In line with this, the Council is ensuring that all existing WiFi across their public buildings and their new public WiFi zones will be Friendly WiFi certified. This certification shows that the WiFi service is safe for users of all ages by filtering out inappropriate content and protecting users from potential online risks.
Enhancing Public Spaces with Newcastle City Council
The expanded WiFi coverage will include parks, public squares, and other outdoor areas, transforming Newcastle into a more connected city. Whether you are taking a stroll in the park, working remotely from an outdoor café, or simply enjoying the city’s public spaces, you can now benefit from reliable and safe internet access.
Benefits for the Community
Increased Connectivity: The expansion will make it easier for everyone to stay connected, whether for work, study, or leisure. This is especially important in today’s digital age, where access to the internet is essential for daily activities.
Promoting Digital Inclusion: By providing free and safe internet access in more locations, Newcastle City Council is helping to bridge the digital divide and promote greater digital inclusion across the city.
Boosting Local Economy: Enhanced connectivity can attract more visitors and support local businesses, contributing to the economic growth of Newcastle.
A Model for Other Cities
Newcastle City Council’s initiative serves as a model for other cities looking to enhance public connectivity while prioritising online safety. The integration of Friendly WiFi certification underscores the Council’s dedication to providing a safe online environment for all users.
Bev Smith, Director from Friendly WiFi said “We are proud to support Newcastle City Council in this significant endeavour. Together, we are working to create a safer, more connected city that meets the needs of its diverse population. As the project progresses, we look forward to seeing the positive impact this expanded and safe WiFi network will have on the community.”
A spokesperson from Newcastle City Council added “Newcastle City Council is excited to unveil their updated Public Wi-Fi in the city centre and public buildings. The safety and wellbeing of our residents and visitors is paramount and the Friendly WiFi certification ensures that the internet can be browsed safely using this service. We look forward to the continued rollout of “Newcastle Public” across the City Centre throughout 2025"
